Why a 1,500 L HLT on a 1,000 L brewhouse
A brew needs strike water plus sparge water, typically 1.3-1.6 times the batch volume. A 1,500 L HLT covers one full brew plus the start of the next, so the plant never runs dry mid-sparge.
Heat recovery on a small plant
Wort cooling energy pre-heats the HLT instead of being dumped to drain. At five brews a day this recovers enough energy to cut steam demand by roughly a quarter, which is meaningful on a small boiler.
Typical Applications
- Breweries planning around a 1,000 batch — At 5 per day the brewhouse delivers roughly 12,500 hl of finished beer per year on a five-day week, which sets the cellar and packaging requirement downstream.
- Sites with 40 of available floor space — The 4 vessels + 1,500 L HLT layout fits within 40 m2 including HLT and heat recovery, and the vessel arrangement determines how much of that space must stay clear for cleaning access.
- Plants committed to steam heating — Steam 0.5 t/h with wort heat recovery is the practical choice here: it removes the boiler room below 2,000 L per batch, while larger sizes recover the cost of steam through faster ramp rates and tighter control.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is heat recovery worth it at this scale?
Yes when you brew more than three times a day. Below that the payback stretches beyond five years.
How much steam does the boiler need to supply?
About 0.5 t/h at 6 bar, or less if heat recovery is running continuously.
What is included with the 1,000 configuration?
The supply covers the 4 vessels + 1,500 L HLT set, interconnecting sanitary piping, the control panel and CIP routing, with Steam 0.5 t/h with wort heat recovery as specified. Cellar tanks, packaging and building works are separate scope, so the plant can be sized to your own distribution plan rather than a fixed package.
